Check your tenancy deposit is protected

If you paid a deposit then your deposit must be protected by your landlord or the agent.

How to check if your deposit is protected

There are 3 deposit protection scheme providers.

Your landlord or agent chooses which scheme to use. They must give you certain written information about where your deposit is protected. The written information is usually contained in the tenancy agreement.

You can check which scheme your deposit is protected with on the scheme websites.

You will need a postcode, surname, tenancy start date and deposit amount to search.

Be sure to take screenshots / print-out of the search results for your record.

If there are any problems accessing the online deposit account you can call the scheme provider on the contact details below:

Deposit Protection Service (DPS) – 0330 303 0030

Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS) – 0300 037 1000

Mydeposits – 0333 321 9401

What to do if you can’t find your deposit

Not all systems are perfect and sometimes it could appear as though your deposit is not protected, even when it is. This could be due to spelling errors.  If you have a joint tenancy, try searching again using another tenant’s surname.

If you paid a deposit and it has not been protected, you could be entitled to compensation. We our expert team of lawyers are here to help tenants. Check if you have a claim

We can help you claim compensation if your landlord has failed to repair any damage to your house, failed to protect your deposit or has unlawfully evicted you.
